
INTRODUCTION
This is a special compilation for all the Chinese New Year related recipes. It will be divided into 3 posts.

- Part 2 (30 recipes) is this post for all traditional auspicious kuih used for praying, snack and dessert recipes which was consumed during the Chinese New Year period. - Part 3 is for all the savoury dishes suggested or suitable for the reunion dinner or Chinese New Year celebration issued in this blog. It also included dishes usually cooked subsequent to the new year celebration. It was basically divided into seafood dishes, pork dishes ,chicken dishes, duck dishes, vegetable dishes, sweets and snacks .

Poon Choi aka Peng Cai or Basin Dish (盆菜) – This has become very common in the recent years and it is not very difficult to prepare
Buddha’s Delight aka Luohan Zhai (罗汉全斋 或 罗汉菜) – A full and luxurious vegetarian dish auspicious to be served during Chinese New Year
Double Abalone Happiness Dish (双鲍争辉) – An abalone dish suitable for Chinese New Year
Braised Sea Cucumber With Minced Meat (海参酿肉) – A sea cucumber dish suitable for Chinese New Year that looks elegant and well planned for. It is not difficult to prepare
Scallop On Yam Basket (扇贝芋窝) – If you are looking for a scallop dish, this recipe may be suitable for you .
Steamed Scallops with Luffa (干贝丝瓜) – a scallop dish that is presentable
Cantonese Classic Sweet And Sour Pan Fried Prawns aka Har Loke ( 干煎茄汁虾禄) – A very classic Cantonese prawn dishes that are well like by many families
Butter Prawns With Egg Floss (蛋丝牛油虾) – If you are looking for prawn dish, you can try this old fashion butter prawns
Simple Prawns Fritters (酥脆炸虾) – When I was young and whenever there are religious praying, this dish always appeared in the dinner table including Chinese New Year reunion dinner. However, it may appeared to be too simple in the current trendy societies
Cereal Prawns (麦片虾) – Another prawn dish suitable for Chinese New Year
Egg White Steamed Prawns (蛋白蒸虾) – This is another classic prawn dish served in the restaurants and suitable for reunion dinner.
Prawn Croquettes (咸香虾枣可乐饼) – This dish is easy to prepare and presentable. There is no need to have extremely big prawns for the recipe.
Deep Fried Prawn Balls (干炸虾枣) – A common dish that can easily prepare and presentable to serve in the Chinese New Year reunion dinner
Cantonese Styles of Chinese Steamed Fish – A common type of fish steaming served in the restaurant. For Chinese New Year , you must use the whole fish that signify the beginning and end of a matter. Fish denotes abundance (年年有鱼)
Teochew Styles of Chinese Steamed Fish – This is the type of steamed fish that we used to have. For Chinese New Year , you must use the whole fish that signify the beginning and end of a matter. Fish denotes abundance (年年有鱼)
Sweet and Sour Fish (酸甜鱼) – This is the old fashion fish dish during the Chinese New Year as the cooking is more elaborate.
Crispy Roast Pork Or Sio Bak (脆皮烧肉) – Many families purchase roast pork during Chinese New Year. Unsure if it is Chinese New Year dish but if you are buying, you can try this recipe.
Chinese Style Barbecue Pork–Char Siu (蜜汁叉烧) – same as roast pork. Char siu is always on demand during Chinese New year .
Chinese Barbecue Sausage aka Siu Cheong (粤式烧烤肝肠/烧肠) – If you roast char siu, you can prepare this together.
Chinese Cured Sausage Recipe (中国腊肠食谱) – I know it is a bit late but this recipe is related to Chinese New Year. If you are game to do your own Chinese sausage, you can consider this recipe. Unlike the above recipe, this recipe will need time to dry the sausages.
Sweet And Sour Meat Balls (糖醋炸丸子) – This is a less elaborate recipe good for small families and taste is delicious.
Famous Wuxi Spareribs (无锡排骨,无锡肉骨头,酱排骨)
Braised Lion’s Head Meatball (红烧狮子头) – there is any name of this dish called 4 happiness meat dish (四喜丸子 – 福禄寿喜)
Braised Nam Yu Pork Trotters With Lotus Roots and Peanuts (南乳花生莲藕猪手) – Some Chinese during Chinese New year reunion dinner as pork trotter signify windfall gain during the year *横财就手)。 You can always add black moss vegetable (fa cai 发菜) in a dish to make it more elegant.
Chinese Style Braised Pork Knuckles (中式焖蹄膀) – Another recipe for pork trotters for you to consider
Pig Trotter Jelly aka Ter Ka Tang (潮汕冷盘:猪脚冻) – This pig trotter jelly is an appetizer for some families who only prepare the dish once a year.
Chinese Tricolour Steamed Eggs (三色蛋) – Some Taiwanese families prepared this dish as an appetizer for the reunion dinner
Ngoh Hiang – These Chinese meat rolls is very common during Chinese New Year. What you saw in the picture is the steamed version that will be deep fried again before servings.
Zhao An (Chawan) Traditional Egg Crepe Meat Rolls (诏安蛋皮肉卷, 姜香猪肉蛋卷) – For Zhaoan dialect, this dish will only appeared during Chinese or big occassions.
Zhao An (Chawan) Smoked Chicken (诏安熏鸡) – A must have chicken dish for my dialect Chawan during Chinese New Year
Simple Homemade Curry Chicken – It is rather funny to share a Malay dish in this compilation. But the fact is Chicken curry is very common during reunion dinner. It is consider as a presentable dish in festivals and many families prepare this for praying too..
Roast Chicken – The recipe is issued for Christmas but we do prepare it for bigger Chinese festivals. Instead of using Western herbs, just rub with honey, five spice powder and some dark soya sauce will give you a perfect oriental roast chicken .
Cantonese Soya Sauce Chicken (粤式豉油鸡, 酱油鸡) – You can try this simple recipe if you need to prepare a chicken dish. A famous Cantonese chicken dish.
Cantonese Roast Duck (粤式脆皮烤鸭) – Many families did buy roast duck for the reunion dinner. You can easily do it at home if you are not comparing those that were sold at the stores.
Teochew Braised Duck or Lor Ark (潮州卤鸭) – Most Teochew families will braise a duck during Chinese New Year.
Radish Stewed Duck (白萝卜焖鸭) – Unsure if it is Chinese New Year dish, but my Hakka relatives always prepared this during Chinese New Year and is always one the favourite for my wife.
Salted Vegetable Duck Soup (咸菜鸭) – Most Teochew will have this soup dish during Chinese New Year
Fish Maw Napa Cabbage Soup – This is a lawless soup dish commonly appeared during Chinese year. During Chinese New year, usually fish maws were used. You can also add in pacific clams to heighten the sweetness of the dish
Fuzhou Spicy and Sour Fish Maw Soup (福州酸辣鱼鳔羹) – If you have extra fish maw, you can prepare this tasty soup
Crispy Golden Yam Ring (佛钵飘香) – This is an impressive well like dish by many and the fillings can be vegetarian or non vegetarian
Chinese Fried Tofu Shrimp Balls–Pipa Tofu (琵琶豆腐) = a tofu dish that you can easily prepare in advance and at home . It is presentable that will impress family members.
Auspicious Chinese Stewed Leek Dish (香蒜报喜) – Leek is a must have dish during Chinese New Year as it have an auspicious denotation that the family will have lots of money to “count)
Leek Stir Fried With Roast Pork (大蒜烧肉) – An auspicious common house hold dishes to cook during Chinese New Year period.
Chap Chye (杂菜) – Many families prepare this dish during Chinese New Year, it can be either vegetarian or non vegetarian
Auspicious Chinese Cabbage Dish (包发百财吉祥菜) – A nice vegetable dish to go with the luxurious meaty dinner
Sour Cabbage Pork Belly (酸菜汆白肉, 酸菜白肉炖粉条) – This is one of the must have dish in the North Eastern Part of China and considered one of the dishes in Chinese New Year.
Hakka Mei Cai Stewed Pork Belly (客家梅菜扣肉)
Hakka Yam Stewed Meat aka Lipu Taro Braised Meat (客家芋头扣肉, 荔浦扣肉) –
Braised Sour and Spicy Mustard Head (酸菜尾) – This dish is usually cooked after festivals whereby there are lots of leftover meats.
Chinese “Osmanthus” Eggs (桂花蛋) – In the illustration, glass noodles are used. For Chinese New Year, you can substitute with crab meat and shark fin
Shanghai Four Happiness Appetizer Dish (上海本帮菜之:四喜烤麸) – This is a must have vegetarian dishes for many Shanghainese families during Chinese New Year.
Hakka Abacus Seeds/Beads (客家算盘子) – Some hakka families do prepare abacus seeds during Chinese New year as it also signify have wealth to count during Chinese New Year
Red Yeast Rice Wine Flour Vermicelli (红糟面线) – This is a must have dish for the Foochow families who cooked it during the first day of Chinese New Year
Chinese Cured Meat Rice aka Lup Mei Fan (粤式瓦煲腊味饭) – A dish well liked by the Cantonese using Chinese cured sausages, pork belly and etc.
Stir Fried Glutinous Rice Dish (生炒腊味糯米饭). – This version of lap mei Fan is more of a restaurant style that uses glutinous rice.
Bakwa and Leek Fried Rice (肉干大蒜炒饭) – One of the way to get rid of excess pork jerky is to fried rice
Seven Vegetable Dish for Ren Ri (人日-七色菜) – This dish was commonly prepared on the 7th day of the first lunar month and each vegetables have a meaning attached to it.
CONCLUSION
I have limited the recipe in this post to be 35 recipes so as not to be long winded. There are still many localized recipe commonly served during Chinese New Year such as chicken satay, nonya acar awak were not being included. Hope the above will benefit readers who are looking for Chinese New Year Recipes. It will be updated when appropriate recipes were issued.
